heartbeat is written by Sharon Creech and the author's style reminds me a little bit of Love that Dog. Although the subject matter is different, it is written in short, easy to read, rhythmical chapters. As I was reading this book, I felt like I was almost in 12 year old Annie's head as she dealt with issues like friendship, an aging grandfather, pressure to join a team, and the birth of a new baby in the family. This is a book that I think any 6th grader might read and enjoy.

Chasing Vermeer

"Reading is thinking" is a slogan you'll see in many classrooms, and it is definitely true if you are reading Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett. If you liked the suspense of Thief Lord, and you can handle a rather slow beginning, you will love this book. Frankly, I was not impressed for the first couple of chapters, but toward the end I couldn't put it down. It has mystery, relationships,and puzzles, with a little art history thrown in. Not for the casual 6th grade reader, but if you are a more mature reader, it might be a welcome change for you!

There are new books in the media center and new AR tests. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is AR level 7.2 and is worth 29 points. The new Artemis Fowl book, The Opal Deception, is AR level 5.7 and is worth 12 points.
AR tests have been received for all SC Children's and Junior Award titles that are in the media center. Some of the Picture Book nominees have tests as well.
Also, for all of you Eva Ibbotson fans, her new book The Star of Kazan is here (level 6.1, 16 points).

Inkheart

Wow! Cornelia Funke has done it again! Personally, I think I enjoyed Inkheart even more than Thief Lord. It is the story of a girl whose mother disappeared when she was very young and whose dad is caught up in a mystery concerning a book that people are willing to kill for. Because of the magical fantasy of the book you sometimes think the setting is in a time long,long, ago, and then the author slips in something about rental cars, cell phones, etc. to remind you that this is a modern day fantasy. It's rather long but for those who can stick with a Harry Potter length book, it is a must-read page turner! Don't skip over the famous book quotes at the beginning of each chapter!

I just read a GREAT book by Gary Paulsen (author of Hatchet). It is an autobiography and has stories about him and his friends when they were teen-agers. This book is hilarious.
If you are a guy, you will love this book! If you like funny stories, you will love this book!

This book was recommended to me by Mrs. Green. It's about a girl who moves with her mother and brother from the big city (Chicago) to the country. So far, she is a real fish out of water and has trouble making friends. There is also a good bit of foreshadowing, hints about what will happen next. For instance, her little brother is a very poor student but can play anything on his harmonica. I have a feeling something bad is about to happen to him. Stay tuned!

He is amazed to find that there are other children like him, and must choose whether to stay safely hidden or take some dangerous risks. I couldn't wait to read the sequel.
